GENERAL INFORMATION

School begins at 7:48 daily and ends at 3:09 each afternoon.
Every Wednesday is “early release” at 2:20 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION
Parents are responsible for getting their son/daughter to and from school on a daily basis. The first bell rings at 7:48 a.m. and students go to their first class. The tardy bell rings at 7:53 a.m. If students arrive after this bell, they will be marked “tardy.” After six (6) tardy marks, students serve a detention. If a student is more than 15 minutes tardy for any class, it is considered an absence.

There is a bus to and from Oostburg daily. Students meet at the Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church parking lot where the bus leaves at 7:20 a.m. Students will be dropped off in Oostburg at 3:25 p.m. The bus runs at the regular time on Wednesdays, when there is early release.

GOLD NOTE
The GOLD NOTE is the weekly newsletter that is sent home on Wednesdays. The GOLD NOTE is emailed to most parents, but a paper copy is also available. We recommend e-mail.

EAGLE CRY
The EAGLE CRY is the quarterly newsletter for SCCHS. This publication contains information about events at SCCHS, updates on student achievements, school board information, and alumni notes. Supporting churches receive the EAGLE CRY, otherwise they are mailed to our families and supporters.

ADVISORY GROUPS
Each student is placed in an Advisory Group with a teacher as the sponsor. These groups are a mixture of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. These groups meet on a regular basis for team-building activities. The purpose of these groups is to build social bonds between students across the grades.

CLASS SPONSORS
Each class also has two teachers as sponsors for their class. These teachers help coordinate class lunches, fund-raiser events, and activities. Class meetings are held during flex period once a month.

ACADEMICS

PROGRESS REPORTS are sent to all freshmen and new students’ homes at mid-quarter of the first quarter. During the second, third, and fourth quarters they are sent out at the teachers’ discretion or by parent request.

REPORT CARDS are sent home with each student at the end of the first and third quarters. Report cards are mailed home at the end of the second and fourth quarters.

EDLINE is an online service provided by SCCHS on our website, www.scchs.com. All parents receive a login and password and can check grades, progress, and reports for their child. Please contact Mr. Ron De Master if you have any questions or problems.

Please understand that Edline is a guide that indicates where a student is academically. It is updated once a week by teachers.

Students are given their own login and password and can also check Edline.

EXAMS are held over a three-day period at the end of each semester. The specific exam schedule and details are outlined at the time of exams

STUDENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES are held in October. Time slots are assigned to the student to meet with his/her advisor. Schedules are posted at that time.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES are held in November. Details for signing up for time slots will be given in the GOLD NOTE in late October or early November.

SCCHS encourages students and/or their parents to meet with a teacher or counselor if there is a question regarding a class assignment, project, or grade.

THE RESOURCE ROOM is available for extra help, tutoring, or special needs in any subject or class at any time. Check with Mrs. Anderson for details.

BIBLE PORTFOLIO (BP)
All students are required to keep a portfolio of projects that illustrate how they see the world in a uniquely Christian way. Each year students must select seven projects that demonstrate a distinctly Christian approach to four areas of learning: knowledge, analysis, creativity, and service. Students must have at least one project in each of the four areas. Each student is assigned to a faculty advisor to manage the portfolio.

A service project consists of twenty hours of service field work and a report describing the project. A log with appropriate signatures must be attached to the report (forms are available in the school office). Service hours can be worked during the summer (i.e. a service project through a church youth group) and submitted by the end of the first quarter. Working at a soup kitchen, Vacation Bible School program or church nursery can all be submitted for service hours. A form and brief explanation must accompany all hours work with a supervisor’s signature.

All service hours must be submitted within the quarter they are worked. All 20 hours need not be submitted at one time. For example, 15 hours worked through a Vacation Bible School during the summer must be submitted by the end of the first quarter. Working the final five hours at a soup kitchen over Christmas break must be submitted before the end of the next quarter.

The other three areas of learning (knowledge, analysis, and creativity) are completed through classroom assignments and projects.

Please note that BP needs to be completed by the last Friday before the end of the school year to be eligible for participation in extra-curricular activities the next fall.   For example, in order for a freshman to play fall sports as a sophomore, his or her BP needs to be completed by June 5, 2009.
