The curriculum of the English /Spanish/Language department at SCCHS is to help students develop a Christian worldview through the study of language, literature, and other media. They should / will have the tools to understand and articulate that vision in society.
E 100 English 9 1 credit Prerequisite: Freshman status Freshmen study English in four major areas: grammar, speech, composi-tion, and literature. The first quarter introduces discussion and the short story; the second quarter focuses on reading and writing non-fiction; the third quarter on romance and the novel; and the fourth quarter on drama and speech. Each quarter includes a review of traditional grammar and English usage.
E 200 English 10 1 credit Prerequisite: Sophomore status The focus of English 10 is the use of language and communication to glo-rify and respond to God. This focus is applicable to all areas related to English as traditionally understood: grammar, drama, poetry, writing, study of novel, and literary interpretation. God gave us the gifts of insight and communication, and we are expected to use and enjoy them carefully, crea-tively, and constructively for the furtherance of His kingdom and glory.
E 300 World-views in American Literature 1 credit Pre-requisite: English 10 This course, coordinating with U.S. History, features examples of Ameri-can Literature from 1500 to 2000. Students will contrast the Calvinist view of life held by many early writers with that of later deists, pantheists, natu-ralist, existentialists, and new-age romantics.
E 400 World-views in English Literature .5 credit Pre-requisite: World–views in American Literature This course features examples of English literature from its Anglo-Saxon Germanic origins to the mid-20th Century. Students will analyze and dis-cuss representative selections and explore the spirit of each age.
E 500 Encounters: A Christian Response to World Literature Pre-requisite: World-view in American Literature .5 credit This thematic course in literature features a Christian response to world literature. Students will discuss and write about the following subjects: encountering God, developing a moral perspective, discovering individu-ality, and living in relationships.
E 600 Senior Composition: expository writing, speech, and drama Pre-requisite: World-views in American Literature and instructor’s permis-sion 1 credit This senior writing workshop is designed for the student planning to go directly into the job market or technical school after graduation. Students study some literature for discussion of Christian world-view; however, they will practice technical and memo writing rather than literary analy-sis. The college bound student may wish to take this course as an elec-tive in addition to the standard required literature-based senior English courses. This workshop may meet the fourth year English requirement with permission from the instructor. Offered as needed.
